"E-Business" and "E-Commerce" are terms used today by the press, analysts and various others to describe a number of applications and services.
E-Business: Whether over an Extranet or an Intranet, an organization may have low levels of trust when it comes to users. Why? Well because the organization actually may be allowing users (customers, partners, and employees) onto the networks that also contain sensitive information and corporate assets. Malicious or inadvertent exposure to this information could prove disastrous for the organization. Therefore, assuring that each user is who they claim to be and that they go where they are supposed to go requires specific functionality from E-Business products including: strong authentication of the user; an encrypted pipe; individualized access control; and monitoring and logging of activities.
E-Commerce: On the other hand, E-Commerce functions may reside "outside" of the organization networks, which might allow the organization to have higher levels of trust when it comes to users' access simply because the information isn't at risk of exposure. E-Commerce solutions are often web-based and transactions do not occur inside the organization's own network. Therefore, assuring that each user is who they claim to be and that they go where they are supposed to go is not a concern, because they can only operate within the E-commerce solution. Generally, and E-Commerce solution only may require strong authentication of the user, and an encrypted pipe.
