nCipher and Kyberpass Announce Strategic Alliance to Provide Enhanced Security For PKI Enabled Applications

Integration of nCipher«s nShield and Kyberpass« Trust Services Manager and Trust Services Gateway offers high performance foundation for secure e-business

WOBURN, MASS., October 09, 2001 – nCipher plc, (LSE:NCH), the leading provider of enhanced security for electronic transactions, today announced the seamless integration of its nShield™ tamper-resistant hardware security module (HSM) with two components of the Kyberpass e-Transaction TrustPlatform™. This combined solution makes it easier for organizations to better secure existing and future Web-enabled business applications that operate within a public key infrastructure (PKI) environment. Proven interoperability between nCipher’s nShield HSM and Kyberpass Trust Services Manager and Trust Services Gateway helps reduce the cost and time associated with deploying complex security applications.

The goal of this joint effort is to provide complementary components to the security infrastructure of financial institutions, government agencies, and other organizations responsible for the protection of personal information and critical internal processes. A fundamental challenge with online transactions compared with in-person meetings revolves around the ability to establish the true identity of people involved. The integrated solution uses digital certificates as electronic passports to validate a person’s online identity and then authorizes access to private information and enables the use of electronic signatures to approve transactions. The use of digital certificates in business applications presents an obvious point of attack, particularly if these processes are performed on unprotected servers. The combination of products from Kyberpass and nCipher addresses this risk and results in a system that can be trusted by business partners and end users alike.

“Our technical partnership with nCipher will truly enhance our e-Transaction TrustPlatform and further differentiate it in the market,” said Robert Lendvai, vice-president of marketing at Kyberpass. “We ultimately selected nCipher based on its proven ability to provide independently validated levels of security, seamless scalability and improved transaction throughput. We are confident that this alliance will allow us to continue to extend our trust-enabling software while ensuring the high level of security and performance demanded by our customers.”

Kyberpass delivers two important security platforms in support of the new emerging web services B2B exchange model and nCipher helps to ensure their safe operation, even in untrusted environments. Kyberpass Trust Service Manager, an integrated XML transaction coordinator and OCSP (Online Certificate Status Protocol) Responder, secures e-business transactions by validating the source of the transaction and routing them to their respective service handlers for interaction with organization’s mainframes and servers. Trust Service Gateway, an XML transaction generator, applies digital signatures to all transactions to ensure their authenticity and integrity throughout the system. However, since B2B exchanges transcend the boundaries of individual organizations, it is vital that security measures reflect broadly recognized industry best practices in order to establish mutual trust. To achieve this, Kyberpass and nCipher enable customers to satisfy the stringent requirements of the widely recognized security benchmark, the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-1.

“We are very pleased to be working with Kyberpass as a member of nCipher’s nAble Partner Program to ensure customers have access to nCipher’s market leading security product line and more importantly, can be confident of its seamless integration with the Kyberpass e-Transaction TrustPlatform,” said Richard Moulds, vice president of marketing, nCipher. “With their focus on transaction-based applications, Kyberpass is addressing not only the need for enhanced security but also the challenges surrounding system performance and scalability. nCipher’s nShield UltraSign HSM is a trusted security device capable of boosting the transaction capacity of a traditional application server by a factor of 20 or more, delivering a highly cost-effective solution to customers.”
