Dial-up routers providing access to a network using a public telephone
network implement a very basic username/password authentication
system. Two protocols are dominant: TACACS and TACACS+, a Cisco
Systems Inc. proprietary protocol; and RADIUS, an industry standard
protocol implemented by other leading vendors such as Bay Networks
Inc. and Shiva Corporation. The Kyberpass Dial-In Authentication
Service in combination with the KyberDIAL client software leverage
the PKI to provide a stronger dial-in authentication using the users
private key digital signature. Users are strongly authenticated
prior to gaining access through the dial-up router to the network.
No other hardware or software is required, and no modifications
are required to customer applications or the dial-up access servers
(routers).
